Large red deer herd by hunting stand

Yesterday we went for a walk just after lunch. Knowing that area well, and the time of day, I wasn’t expecting to see any large animals about as they usually prefer dawn and dusk to break the cover of the treeline. However, as we’ve had three days of constant hard rain, and this was the first day with a clear sky, I was proven wrong. On one side of the valley a sounder of wild boar ran up the hill, and on the other, an enormous herd of Red deer came out to graze. The sheer size of this herd was surprising as it is usually only during winter months that they group in such a number – in Summer they prefer much smaller groupings.

I bet the owner of the shooting stand was kicking himself for not being present – there were a lot of antlers about.
