It’s that time of year again when the valley in which my house is located resounds with the baying of rutting stags, day and night. This year there are quite a few of them. It’s amazing to be in the middle of a challenge and to watch these giant beasts screaming at each other.
One thing that makes me very sad and very angry is that hunters are allowed to shoot them at this, their breed’s most important, time. This is the period when the breed’s survival is decided by the strongest and fittest. Having some fat alcoholic shoot them from a parked car at the side of the road because they can’t even be bothered going into the forest disgusts me. The law should be changed so that this period is closed for hunting, at least until they’ve fertilized next year’s stock.
